As an Urban Designer, I strive to balance aesthetics with form and function, which can be challenging when you have to accommodate essentially everyone who uses public infrastructure. Also challenging is working with very smart engineers, facility planners and even scientists who sometimes appear not to care about the aesthetics, but who really do think about design - just in different ways. I have been lucky enough to travel and work in some great places where I am always fascinated by how differently cultures approach design, and what things are important to other people might be different to what I am used to.
I have been working in the urban planning and design industry for more than 30 years getting my start at Eastern Washington University with a BA in Urban and Regional Planning, and a Master of Landscape Architecture degree at The University of Arizona. Although most of my time working in the Pacific Northwest, Arizona and Puerto Rico has been spent planning and designing public infrastructure, I also co-owned a restaurant for 7 years, and yes, design was definitely a big part of that work as well. |
